We all know how important it is to be properly qualified for our jobs and careers. In order to become a graphic designer, the minimum prerequisite is a bachelor’s degree in graphic designing, coupled with creativity and communicating ability. But, merely getting a degree is not good enough as we all know. You will receive job offers based on your experience and your CV. So getting some work experience as an intern is always a good idea.
Internships and Their Importance
As a graphic designing student, you must always be on the look out for interning opportunities during your college days. This carries a lot of weight, because, as an intern, you’ll be getting industrial experience which is what every employer looks for in prospective candidates, the greater the number of internships listed on your CV, the stronger are your chances of getting a job. Moreover, competition is tough, so any edge over the others is welcome.
Qualifications and Eligibility
Now, for the basic educational qualifications. A bachelors’ degree in fine art or graphic designing is offered at many colleges and schools. Principles of design, studio art, computer software classes, commercial designing classes, techniques of design will all be a part of the curriculum which will equip you for the graphic designing industry.
You will, of course have an edge over the others if you come from a liberal arts background. Some knowledge of psychology, history, culture studies, sociology and foreign languages is hugely welcome. This helps designers broaden their niche. For example, you are able to better communicate with people if you know something about psychology.
If you want a job right away, then enrolling in a professional institution is probably the best option for you. These courses are generally two or three years long and after graduating from these schools, you generally qualify as assistants to experienced graphic designers or get a job as a graphic designer in a post which requires technical skills. Of course, at the same time, you must follow all technical updates in the computer world and learn the ins and outs of using these to your advantage.
